Naturally Dyed Quail Eggs
Naturally Died Quail Eggs
Takes time and care
Recipe/ Experiment
Quail eggs – as many as you want
For each dye bath you will need 2 cups water, 2 Tbs. white vinegar and 1 cup fresh ingredients or 1/4 cup for dry ingredients.
A drop of vegetable oil for each bath
Things to try:
1/4 cup black tea, 2 cups water, 2 Tbs. white vinegar
1 cup chopped beets, 2 cups water, 2 Tbs. white vinegar
1/4 cup turmeric powder, 2 cups water, 2 Tbs. white vinegar
1 cup frozen blueberries, 2 cups water, 2 Tbs. white vinegar
1 cup chopped turnip greens, 2 cups water, 2 Tbs. white vinegar
Place ingredients for each dye bath into a small pans. (I do 2 at a time…while I am washing dishes.) Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Cool slightly and pour through a strainer into a bowl. Wash pan and repeat with next color.
Make all your dyes and let cool to room temperature before cooking eggs.
Rinse quail eggs and place in a pan and cover with water. Add 1/4 tsp. sea salt. Bring to a boil and then turn heat down. Cook for 4 minutes. Gently pour out water and eggs into a colander. Put hot eggs into cool dye baths. After the eggs are in add a drop of oil to each dye. Let steep for 10 minutes. Remove and drain eggs to dry.
Refrigerate eggs until ready to set out for decoration. Refrigerate eggs after. If you are eating these eggs please treat them like fresh cooked protein. Up to 4 hours out of refrigeration only.
Experiment, try everything you can think of that might work that is edible. Even if you get not much color the eggs themselves are so pretty so there is no way to fail.
Have fun.
Happy Easter!
